If you look carefully at this photo, you'll probably notice that the second floor seems to be a bit short. Most farmhouses were built in this way, the thinking being that, if you were sleeping on the second floor, you would be lying down and needed only the taller area along the center of the room to stand up in. They did this to conserve wood in the building of houses. Almost all the farmhouses we saw were built in this way - even the modern ones.
